We have been waiting for 4 weeks. They needed to talk about all the possible complications. I've got some very narrow openings in my belly because of an accute dissection 11 years ago.
But they have the go ahead now :-) excited and but a little scared as well....

Lilly Black Nadia, one of my friends who I've know for 33 yrs and still keep in touch long distance is from Eindhoven, the Netherlands. I understand what you mean. I was happy to have my surgery scheduled because I knew I would feel so much better.....and I do! I also wanted it over and done with so I can go on with my life. I wish you lots of good luck!

Hi! This is Nadia from The Netherlands.
I signed up here when I thought I needed valve replacement only. Now its clear I will have a Bentall procedure (root replacement) with mechanical valve.
I am only 36 years old and have had an acute dissection of the aorta before (11 years ago). That was a hard time and it took 2 years for me to recover.
Does anyone here have any experience with the Bentall procedure?

Nadia van Raam Dear Cathleen, thanks so much for your message. How long did your recovery take? Dd you have to stay on breathing support for a long time? What caused the problem for you?
There is not one specific concern. Its just that this will be a reoperation and may be more risky (I had an accute dissection before)

Cathleen Weed Hi Nadia, We do have so much in common :). Yes, the recovery seemed a bit longer after the Bentall because there was more to it and also being a re-do. However, the breathing tube came out right away in ICU just as before. I had been working out all the way up to the surgery because I didn't know about the aneurysm (yikes). In fact, I was IN the gym when I took the call from my cardiologist that they had found the aneurysm during my echo two days prior..lol. It was emergency OHS two days later. So anyway my lungs were strong going in as always. That's always good. I'm sorry to hear about the prior dissection. You are very lucky to be here! I would just say expect the same type of recovery as before with maybe a little extra exhaustion at first. I still left the hospital after 4 days. I signed up for cardiac rehab again..which I love...and then went back to my gym. I do everything I ever did before with the exception being I use lighter weights and more reps, which is totally fine. I had to keep my HR under 140 during cardio for the first few months. I believe my aneurysm was due partly to a connective tissue disorder (never officially checked into that but my dad's side is very slender and tall...the men are 6'5" to 6'8" and the women are 6'). I was also born with a bicuspid aortic valve and that seems to sometimes go hand in hand with these aneurysms developing later. Anyway, the other factor was probably stress due to the deaths of my dad, brother, mom, and sister in a short amount of time. I'm sure that didn't do me any favors if that area was already weak lol. The dacron graft is awesome and I haven't had any issues. It lasts for your lifetime. The bovine aortic valve they attached to it lasted 11 years and then I had TAVR through the femoral artery last August. :)
