Hello Fellow Heart-Recovery Friends!
Can someone please help me with a few questions? I had Mitral & Tricuspid Valve repair in March 2019. My cardiologist has given me a clean bill of health with now restrictions. However, I'm a bit concern as to how rigorous I can now "tax" my heart in terms of exercise. I use to do mini triathlons and would like to do them again, but, would like to know what my new "Target Heart Rate" should be. I'm 67 years old, 160 pounds and though my heart is now in great condition I don't want to cause any undue stress! Your help is very much appreciated. To your good health, Salvatore Cafiero

William True Definitely talk to your cardiologist. 155 is far too high. Your max achievable heart rate is probably 153. Genetics and training can change that number, but it’s a good baseline. Consider asking your cardiologist about your HR zones. Find out what your zone limits are, and then decide where you want to focus your training. Then run your race the way you trained. If you see a rate in the 150’s you are burning a match. Most athletes race sustained pace at 65-80% max HR, so 99-122 bpm should be a good goal for you.

Phyllis Petersen You've got this! I had MVr in October 2016 and am doing very well. Many of the people going through this have high quality lifestyles, but that isn't the problem with this issue. For a little encouragement, a little over two months after my valve repair I hike for 4 hours on the Pima Canyon Trail. I had to take it slow and more breaks than usual, but you will be back out doing what you love before you know it.
