Have a safe procedure Kristen! Have confidence in yourself, your surgical team and surgeon. You got this! Give yourself grace when necessary but keep moving forward. Use the incentive spirometer at the frequency that is suggested to you despite it “sucking”. Walk when you can but keep in mind that with the Ross procedure it’s not a bad thing to gradually get back to your exercise routine over an extended time. Take care!

Thinking of you, Kristen. Almost over with and soon to be in recovery!!!. Focus on that prize. Know that will be incredibly exhausted, depleted when you wake-up, but that you gain strength exponentially every day. The ICU is outstanding; stay there as long as you can before going to step-down:) - seriously. . Drink some protein shakes from the outside stores, if your appetite is not that great for a day or two. And get ear plugs for the step-down unit🤪

Hi Kristen! I see that you also have aortic valve stenosis and will be having the Ross procedure. I am still deciding on which surgery option I will choose but was wondering how you came to decide the Ross procedure was best for you and how you picked your surgeon.

Kristen Newton Hi Shannon! I did quite a bit of research on long term outcomes with the Ross versus mechanical or biological, and decided that since I'm fairly young and typically very active, the Ross procedure was more conducive for my lifestyle and had better long term outcomes. I met with a couple of different surgeons, one at Mayo Clinic in AZ and one in Seattle, but ultimately I decided to go with Dr. Stelzer because of the volume of Ross procedures that him and the team at Mt. Sinai have done. When is your surgery?

Shannon Marlow I don’t have a date for surgery yet. I was leaning towards trying to get a valve repair with a Dacron replacement aorta. Ross is my second choice at this time and may very well still be what I do. I meet with a surgeon in 1 week at OHSU

Hi Kristen, I recently had a Ross procedure at Mt Sinai Hospital in NYC with Dr El-Hamamsy, and would highly recommend him. Someone closer to you is Dr Burke at UW and he was chosen by several members who have had a Ross procedure. Andrew Dial is one of his patients. You could find more information on Dr Burke in the surgeon finder tool and send Andrew, using the find members option in the drop down, a guestbook post if you had questions about his experience.

Jeff Williams I had the pleasure of meeting Dr El-Hamamsy and Dr Burke a few weeks ago. Both are world class and watching them teach a hands-on workshop of the Ross Procedure was pretty cool. I don't think you could go wrong with either.
