3 weeks almost to the minute, post SAVR, aortic valve replacement Hemi-sternotomy, 27mm Inspiris Resilia bovine valve. Less than 36 hours in the ICU & 4 days in step down before being released. Two sternum plates & 5 wires holding me together.
I believe I'm doing great! Walking 2-3 times a day, 30-50 minutes each time, approx. 4 miles/day.
Most of the pain is gone, dealing with uncomfortableness still when lying down, sneezing/coughing etc. drainage tube hole is taking its time healing, sternum is doing well, still some scabbing, about half of my cut. Ocular migraines every day, just the vision though, no headache.
No narcotics, but taking 1000mg Tylenol twice per day, 12.5mg Metoprolol twice per day.
All my pre-sugerery symptoms are gone! There is light at the end of the tunnel! I can see it , stay the course heart warriors.
All my best to those who've gone through it, about to go through it or those waiting for answers. Waiting was definitely the hardest part.

J Alexander Lassally Hey Geoff - CC alum here. I hear you on the nerves. The intubation is what it is. I was aware for a period of time before being extubated, but managed through. It becomes part of the war story. Some folks have no memory whatsoever. Hopefully, you will be in that camp.

Marie Myers No, you are asleep when intubated. But as you are waking up, you may remember being intubated. Some people wake up extubated and don’t remember it at all. I remember waking up with the tube in, and I remember briefly chewing on it. I fell back asleep, and when I woke again, it was gone. Preoperatively, I worried about the tube, but it was a non-issue for me.

Dan Fouratt Geoff, I played golf today with a golf buddy cardiologist who I have not played with since my surgery (March 24). He asked me if I was nervous going into the surgery. I said no. His comment was that is unusually very helpful, stay calm. Regarding the tube. I "woke up" not remembering and went straight for the tube. They stopped me and restrained my. When woke up the second time I could not go for the tube. If I had to do it again I would ask to be restrained when I went in, there is no downside.

Robert Miller I had a couple of surgeries and don't recall any intubation. The only thing I remember is that after my first surgery, I saw a bright light and someone said "he is waking up" (or something like that). No pain. No anxiousness. It's all a blurr. My throat did feel a little bit irritated after my second surgery but it was just like a small sore throat. Make sure you are prepared for everything after surgery. Especially, if you have open heart surgery, you will be limited in what you can do. That's really what you need to prepare for.

Last summer CC said I have time before surgery & is not required yet (BAV), so I've been waiting. I go back to CC in July (stress echo, cardiac MRI & BnP). I will go see my primary cardiologist in 2 weeks for my yearly echo when I get back from a hiking vacation at Joshua Tree. Supposed to leave 4/8
I've had two episodes within the past 48 hours. On Friday I felt so dizzy and almost fainted while at work, it was so bad I almost had a coworker call emergency.
This morning around 4am, I was woken up in arrhythmia. Not too fast or slow, but it was like a madman just jumping all over the place. It took 15 minutes to get to a normal rhythm.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'm freaked out & wondering if I should I try to get in before I leave for vacation?

Allen Carkner If you felt like it was almost worth calling EMS. In my opinion you should try to be seen as soon as possible. To have multiple symptom episodes, it is important to check in on where your heart and valve are at. Wish you the best.

Thanks !

Back in February, my cardiologist told me the tests have confirmed that I finally need to replace my aortic valve (BAV). Heart Cath, TEE, echo etc... And that I should do it weeks to months and not wait.
Went to the Cleveland clinic yesterday and he did confirm the valve needs to be replaced, but he said we have plenty of time. I do go back in July to get an MRI and a stress echo to get measurements and more detailed and specific information on function, size and flow.

Susan Lynn Geoff - Timing seems to be a very individual judgment call from one surgeon to another. You have to remember, the Cleveland Clinic handles some of the toughest, most complex heart surgeries in the world, so it's possible that they're less prone to rush into a case that isn't a true emergency. You'll choose the surgeon, facility, and timing that feels right for you. Keep asking those good questions! Knowledge is power. Good luck!

Not recommended by the way. I think in the end, it is up to you. Its your heart.

Had a heart catheterization and it all came out great, Dr confirmed all I need is a replacement aortic valve. But it seems like I've been having more bad days than good days. Having trouble with a little flutter and it seems longer to be able to catch my breath and light headed a little more often. I have 13 days until my 2nd opinion at CC, but who's counting, lol.
As scary as it is, I cannot wait to get in and get this valve replaced.

Richard Munson One tip i found is that at my doctors office after they do my annual echo i can read everything they found on my patient portal. I can then look at it as well as the last one i had to make my own comparisons. After my mitral valve surgery i started paying closer attention and noticed that i had an aortic aneurism that was admittedly only 4.1 cm. When i asked about it, they said yes, but its no where near the dangerous stage, plus you are 6-5 which makes it less critical. I actually said, do you think maybe i might have wanted to know. Some folks want to know very little, i want to know everything. I said at one point to my cardiologist who is great by the way that he must hate to see me coming with my list of questions. He surprised me and said he prefers it.
