Soggy Rodent A month after surgery, I had a thunderclap headache. 4mos post-surgery I started having neurologic events. I was walking with a friend and then lost partial motor control in my right leg and then felt the right side of my face go numb. My docs sent me to the ER and a CT was done. First they thought I had MS so I was referred to a neurologist who said I may have had a stroke in my medulla oblongata. I was then referred to a vascular neurologist who thought that maybe what I had experienced was migrainous in nature. I started taking 400mg of riboflavin daily and it has helped. I still get ocular migraines but not as frequently. I haven't had another event with my leg but the right side of my face will occasionally get numb...

Andrea Smith Sorry to hear that you have had a TIA. I had a suspected TIA four months after my AVR. I had a partial loss of vision in my left eye for a few minutes. I reported this to my cardiologist and was referred to the stroke clinic. I was unable to have an MRI due to my pacemaker so had a CAT scan which didnāt reveal anything conclusive. I was treated as if it was a TIA and prescribed Clopidogral (blood thinner) and a statin, and not allowed to drive for a month. All very frustrating when I was making a good recovery. My surgery was a year ago this month and I can finally say I feel normal again! So what I am trying to say is, yes itās a setback and disappointing but hopefully you will be perfectly ok after it. All the best

It's funny how doctors are so different. I had a 6-month follow up echo, then one a year after surgery. After that, my cardiologist said he only needed to see me every two years for an echo. That made me nervous going so long between, but I figure he doesn't want me to die any more than I do, so we're all good.

I went for my follow up this morning. I got back everything except for lifting. He said I am doing very good. He also put my mind to rest with people saying I should be doing more, he said, first are any of them a heart surgeon, then he said, only listen to what my team of Dr's say and if anyone has any questions, they can call him. He is an awesome Dr. I would recommend him to anyone in the Phoenix area.

Fantastic news Kim! And I smiled when I read what your surgeon said about people calling him if they had any questions. You're doctor is in your "court." I had "well meaning" friends tell me that they thought I was "ready" for cardiac rehab; that I "looked good so it's hard to believe you still haven't recovered" and "gosh! so&so had heart surgery and they recovered so must faster." Not helpful, lol ... The list goes on and it just makes me chuckle. I've even said to someone that I didn't realize they had their medical degree! Not a friend, obviously. ;-)
I think people mean well when they have suggestions but it's not about them. Those close to us, are anxious that we get "back to normal ASAP" ... scary for others watching us go through surgery/recovery.
Debra Langford Great news! When you said you got back everything but lifting what did you mean?

Gerald Poulton Hi Kim, it often hurts more than the surgery itself. I was fortunate in that my lungs were healthy and didnt gain a lot of flem, but I coughed religiously just to keep them that way and to exercise them. The idea š” Is not only holding the pillow against your chest, but try to wrap your arms around yourself as far as you can.give yourself a BIG hug. This will help a lot because by doing thus you are also holding the bones and incision together. Also you dont have to cough as much as exhale deeply from your lungs bringing up any mucus, it us not as hard on you as a barking type cough. Your on the right road now, recovery š

One of my best Pre surgery preparations. Best to all have f you going into surgery, the other side is great š

I just confirmed my appointment with the surgeon for Monday. I asked his assistant if surgery will be scheduled while I am there. She said, no. She will meet with the Dr. He will tell her what he wants then call me later in the day or on Tuesday. I asked her if there would pre-op stuff, she said when she calls we would discuss schedules. What could he want? Could she just wait and compare his schedule to what days the hospital have available before calling me?

Had my final test yesterday (PFT) Didn't realize how difficult it is to breath out that air until you have to force it out. Will get the results on Monday. Do they effect surgery, . would it be delayed? Or does the surgeon just use the results for his benefit for surgery and recovery? My next appointment with the surgeon is Jan. 15, 2018, I was told the surgery would be scheduled that day and possibly for the following week. It seems the closer everything gets, the more anxious I become I cannot even fathom how it will be once it is scheduled because this part is hard.

I just can't keep doing this; I was supposed to have my final test today, PFT, the tester called off, they wanted to reschedule, this wouldn't be until the end of the month. I really need to get this surgery done, my anxiety and stress is through the roof and now I am looking at Feb. Lord, please give me strength.
Delays and reschedules are fairly common. A lot of us just figure that things happen for a reason and if the doctors thought it was urgent they would not delay. So, this may actually be a good sign.
Somewhere toward the bottom of my journal is the story of all I went through trying to schedule a cardiac MRI. That was nothing but delays too! There have been several members of this community who had their surgeries postponed the night before they were scheduled to arrive at the hospital.
And who will ever forget the time in 2013 my husband was laying drugged in the cath lab awaiting his stent when the nurse came to tell me that they couldn't find the Interventionist and I should take my husband home with an 80% blockage and reschedule. I hope the hospital is still reeling from my anger.
It is all part of the experience. Taking deep breaths and finding peaceful things to do can help somewhat.
Sending best hopes for peace while things are sorted out.

Phyllis Petersen I had the same frustration with getting fit in for tests, including thinking I was schedule for a TEE only to find out that the doctor's assistant had made an appointment for an unnecessary office visit. Mixed signals. After that, she was a champion for handling so much for me. When I called for MRA and CTA (doctor wanted them back to back), I was told a couple of months out. The doctor made arrangements for me to have it a month earlier at crack of dawn, because he wanted to get things moving. From the time I found out about the severity of my valve until surgery was 10 months, and would have been more if the surgeon's schedule hadn't opened up an extra couple of weeks. It's frustrating and the anxiety is beyond belief, but, as Anna, said, if it was more urgent they would get it done. Good luck with moving forward!

The appointment I thought I had on Friday is not available and they will not have anything open till Jan. 23. Just aggravating.

I went to the ER on Nov. 13th. I was having a real bad cough and very short of breath. Oxygen level was low and I was admitted. Throughout the 10 days I was there; Tests showed I have; pneumonia, Pulmonary Hypertension, COPD and Mitral Valve regurgitation. I met with the surgeon on Dec. 6th. I was told, need to have replaced, cannot do the minimally invasive, so I will have the full open heart. I chose the mechanical valve based off the Dr. recommendation. Also need two tests done, angiogram and a PFT (Pulmonary Function Test) Good news with the angiogram- no blockages. First thing good since all this started, Next week I have the PFT. From there? I am assuming having another appointment with the surgeon and scheduling. I can say, I really do like the surgeon, he is very down to earth, he has a calming demeanor about him. He talked to me at my level of understanding, not going over the head to cause more confusion. Next update- next week. Until then, Happy New Year!!!

I am so scared, my anxiety is through the roof. They have to go through the sternum and of course, stop my heart. My biggest fear, what if they cannot get it started again. What happens during recovery, what if I cannot do everything. Are these questions normal? Has anyone else had the same.
These thoughts and worries are very normal. If you read the journals here, you will find mostly everyone is terrified prior to the surgery. The common refrain is that the wait is the worst part.
Lots of people talk about their recoveries on this site too.
I hope you will post often and read a lot. It should help to calm some of your fears.

Peggy Whitecotton Your questions and fears very normal as all of us on this web site will testify to that. I remember talking to my surgeon and I said, "you are going to stop my heart, what if you can't restart it????" He said that was very rare for that to happen. And, like he also told me that without the surgery I was facing a death sentence, So remember this is your chance for a new heart a second chance to live and you will get through this. My grandmother died at 55 years old of heart valve disease the same as I had. But there was no hope in her day like we have now... Read my journals, hope they will help.
