Daneen Douglas I just passed my 4 month point too and mostly back to normal with a few exceptions like Valerie. Still sleeping a lot after working full time. I think I will feel back to normal after I wear my heart monitor and hopefully be free of a few meds after I’m found to be afib free. Fingers crossed!

Week 7 today for Dave. It was a big weekend as our youngest daughter graduated and we had a party that 120 people attended. It was hard for him not being able to help with the big things, but he had a great time visiting with the guests. He also started cardio rehab and got results that all the fluid is now gone from the pericardial effusion. Hope all are doing well!

Day 37. Dave has finally started feeling more back to normal and isn’t having any pain. Cardiac rehab starts next Tuesday. Tried driving a short distance. Our youngest daughter graduates in 1 week and it’s hard for him not being able to help with most things for the party. Sleep is still a problem, especially falling asleep. He will probably start back half days June 10th at his job and work from home. To all those waiting for surgery, you got this!

Onward and upward!
DAY 17 Post op. It’s been 2 weeks since I’ve posted. I was very focused on getting to and through Dave’s surgery that I didn’t think much of recovery. He had a couple of set backs in the hospital and at home.
He had bouts of Afib and Aflutter on days 3-5. Aflutter lasted 24 hours before meds kicked in. Was going to have a cardio version if it didn’t clear with meds. Was sent home on day 7. Had a few short bouts of elevated heart rate. On day 11, his heart rate was low, he had neck, shoulder and rib cage pain on the left side. We ended up going to the ER in the early hours of the morning. He was diagnosed with pericardial effusion , was admitted back in hospital and has a procedure to drain the fluid from around his heart. There was close to a liter. He stayed in for 2 nights and had bad Afib. All vitals were really good and he didn’t have any pain.
He has been having good days, vitals and blood work are great. Hoping things are calming down and moving forward. Actual pain has been almost non existant.

Day 2 post surgery. Have to say it’s so much better on this side for both patient and caregiver. Things are progressing well for Dave. He did go into AFib in the middle of the night, he is now on IV drip of amiodarone. Chest tube and catheter out this morning. Pain level low today. Will probably be discharged this weekend.

Is it smart to get dental work such as crowns done before surgery?

Susan Lynn Pam - As Valerie said, dental clearance is required, but if the crown can wait, then hold off. The preparation and the delivery of a crown often result in bleeding of the surrounding gum tissue. When germs in the mouth get into the bloodstream, that can increase the probability of infection in the heart. Make sure you get your teeth cleaned before surgery and let your hygienist and dentist know about your heart condition.

Valerie Allen Susan Lynn, is there a timeframe in which that would be a concern (a crown)? Mine was done 3 months prior to surgery. I wanted to get it done as I currently don’t have to take antibiotics for dental, but I will afterwards of course.
Rita Savelis Yes. Most doctors will suggest it. Better to do it before rather than soon after.

Susan Lynn Valerie - The American Heart Association has changed recommendations about premedication for dental procedures over the years. There was a time I took antibiotics for three days before and after my dental appointment because I had a mitral valve prolapse. They eventually switched to shorter duration and bigger doses of medications. I think the current recommendation is not to take them at all because antibiotics may become less effective when patients need to use them for other forms of infection.
My dentist always had me premedicate before my heart surgery and continues to recommend it. The regurgitation many valve patients have causes blood to go backward into the heart and, unfortunately, it carries the bacteria and germs from our mouths in its path. If you had your crown done three months before your surgery, then it wasn't a problem for you. I suspect most people don't have a problem, the antibiotics are precautionary and there are many solid reasons not to take them more frequently than necessary. It becomes an individual choice, but my opinion is that it might be safer to undergo these types of dental procedures when the regurgitation is mild or non-existent. There are situations where a crown absolutely has to be done (i.e. a broken tooth with exposure to the pulp, a root canaled tooth at high risk of fracture, a cracked deep filling, etc.), and in that case, it's advisable to get it.
Valerie Allen Thank you. To my knowledge my issues do not involve regurgitation.

Mirza Baig I have severe aortic stenosis -My front teeth(teeth number 9) was broke down with the crown on it in November while I was oversees. I text and send pictures to my dentist in USA- she text me back and told me that I need implant-On November 26 she has extracted the teeth and did the bone grafting- now it is about 4 months or so. I have a dentist appointment on April 23 for pre-opp. I am hoping they will perform the implant, wait for 6 months for implant to solidify and after the screw the crown.
What should I do -Hold everything and have my surgery done (TAVR) or wait till the implant and crown was done

c w The only thing I can think of that is not always mentioned is a back scrubber for the shower… the kind with a handle and a bristle brush or a loofah on the end so it can double as a back scratcher. After surgery you're not allowed to reach behind your back for a while. They sent me home from the hospital with one that had a soft sponge on the end, but did not satisfy the need to scratch!
