It's been a while since I posted anything...but all is well and I am busy busy busy :). It has been almost 9 weeks post op, and things are going pretty well. I am started to feel somewhat normal again. I had a follow up with the Cardiologist a few weeks ago and everything looked great! Had a normal echo, blood work was good and most of my limitations were lifted...Yay.
I am back to work full time, and I never knew how tiring it would be still, even though physically I feel great! There are still days where I feel as if I am in a "fog" and just don't have ambition or energy to do anything....and I don't! Trying to rest as much as I can so I don't over do it, and so far that has worked out fine.
I am sleeping a little better at night, now that I can comfortably sleep on my side, I never thought this day would come..LOL
I have done quite a bit in the last 3 weeks, we traveled to Texas to see my brother get married....I learned how to make flower bouquets...well boutonnieres actually and was able to help with pre-wedding stuff, we spent lots of time at the pool so far, went camping with some friends and running my oldest around to basketball practices, so all in all we have been pretty busy...and it doesn't look like its going to slow down anytime soon.
I am still battling the right meds for blood pressure. Mine seems to fluctuate so much because of my anxiety and I haven't figured out what it is when I am completely resting or calm....I go a million miles a minute and if I am not, my brain is...LOL it has been controllable, but still not where we need it to be. The cardiologist told me that I have an enlarged aorta, which was there pre-surgery and will always be there, we just have to watch to make sure it doesn't get any bigger. My BP will play a huge factor in that, so we are doing everything we can to keep the BP at a normal rate. I am even thinking about taking up Yoga to help get my mind off things. Anyone out there do yoga, has it helped you?
I have lots of pictures to post, and I will post them a little later. I hope all my heart brothers and sisters are continuing to recover well.
God Bless!

Elaine Cutri Glad you're doing so well after just 9 weeks post-op. Sounds like a sprint at your house! Getting your BP lowered sounds like a priority - your aorta may enlarge slowly, but will not get smaller. Stress and low BP were 2 things my Cardiologist said I needed to lower when they discovered my enlarged ascending aorta a few years ago. It changed slowly, 1 mm/year. Last year it was repaired, but I still keep an eye on BP and stress - so far, so good. Best wishes.

It's been 1 month today since my surgery. Overall recovery has been going very well for me...I had a few setbacks with blood pressure but that is under control now.
I'm feeling good and finally started sleeping in my own bed!! It hasn't been the greatest nights sleep yet as I'm still trying to find my "spot"...but it's nice to be in my own bed rather than the recliner.
The only complaint I have now is that I think I have a little more pain in my incision area than I did after surgery....most of the time when I get up and move around it feels as if my chest is ripping open😵...my incision area is healing beautifully but is still tender.
I've been able to get out of the house quite a bit and have done well...I notice that I'm not quite as tired as I was even 2 weeks ago! It's nice to walk a little outside. Driving is still a NO NO...I thought I could drive the boys to school because it is less than a mile from our house...but it still hurts to turn the steering wheel.
It's amazing to think back on this day a month ago and it's emotional to think where I was compared to where I am now. I'm so glad I made the decision to get fixed and feel better and start to live a healthy happy life.
I know that not everyone story is the same, and I wish that everyone could have as successful recovery as I did.
For those that are thinking about it....do it! You will be glad you did and everyday...every week...every month after surgery gets better and better. This is coming from someone who has never had a broken bone, stitches or been in the hospital for anything other than to have my boys...and my experience wasn't as horrifying as I made it out to be.
Some days are better than others, but you take it day by day...and that's what I'm doing😊

Nap Garcia I appreciate your insight, especially where you said "those that are thinking about it...do it", as I fluctuate every now and then whether or not to go through with the surgery, because I am symptomatic, but don't know what the risk is of further damage to my heart if I just continue dealing with the symptoms and not have my severe regurgitation repaired. What symptoms were you experiencing which led you to decide to go through surgery?

Marilyn M Tonia, so glad to hear you are doing well and your blood pressure issues have been resolved! I tried sleeping in bed a few times but I'm back in the recliner. Easier for me to breathe in the recliner. Sometimes I get burning and numbness around my incision. Feels like it's on fire.
It has to feel good tho getting out and about a little. Feeling a little more back to normal, considering where we both were one month ago.
Hope your recovery continues going smoothly and you get stronger every day!

Yesterday was 2 weeks since surgery. I can honestly say for me recovery hasn't been too bad.
The first week at home was pretty good for the first few days...had some emotional roller coasters but overall had been good.
The rest of the week has been a bit of a struggle...my blood pressure has been causing some issues with spiking too high.
I almost made a trip to the ER but it came down...I've been on the phone with the Clinic almost everyday this week. I've had a headache for almost 10 days straight and I feel it has to do with my BP.
Finally today we agreed that it was time to go back on all the meds I was taking before surgery, but I have to ease into them slowly.
It sucks for me, because I feel as if I've been on bed rest for the last 3-4 days and it has been very frustrating and discouraging.
Hopefully with the way we are spreading out the meds will help and I will start to feel better.
I would like to take a walk outside or be able to go out and about because otherwise I'm feeling pretty good.
I did go for my post op tests and everything is great!!! Heart is working much better than before, no issues with air in the lungs anymore....yay!!! So I'm ready to get back to feeling normal again.
It's hard for me, but I know I have to take one day at a time.
Thanks to everyone who has followed my journey and thinking about those heading into surgery.
God Bless!

I am so thankful and glad that I decided to get a second opinion and chose to go to the Cleveland Clinic. I had been dreading surgery day and have been so scared for the last year thinking about all of this stuff. Someone who has never had a type of surgery or broken bones. My only time in the hospital was when I had my boys and that's it! So the emotions were on high alert for a very long time.
I'm glad it's over so now I don't have to be scared and anxious anymore.
I have had a positive experience with this entire process from surgery to recovery, thus far. I am very thankful for that!!
Glad to be home with the family and my boys because I missed them so so much😊
I am very thankful for Adam Pick for creating this site for people to share store is and create a platform for support. This site and reading his book truly helped me through the process and the "unknowns".
I also had a great surgical team and the best surgeon in the country (in my opinion). The team was outstanding and made me feel comfortable and pain free. The surgeon was able to repair instead of replace my valve and was extremely confident that the repair was the best option and that it would last a very long home and possibly my lifetime.
I had an amazing support team through this entire journey, from family to friends, to co-workers and also from complete strangers.
I truly wish that anyone experiencing oHS could have the same experience that I had. I know everyone is different and conditions and other factors play into their outcome.
I just hope that you stay focused and positive and know that you are not alone in this. Yes it is scary, but it is also a wonderful feeling to be alive and fixed.
Your body goes through something very traumatic, but the heart is truly strong and amazing!
God Bless everyone and thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all of the support from sharing stories, to the continued encouragement and advice!
Keep Ticking!

Marilyn M Hi Tonia, I'm soo glad that your recovery is going so well! It is hard to believe how we were both feeling one week ago tonight. We've already come a long way!
I think the biggest relief is not having the anxiety that was hanging over us constantly before surgery. I know this was the scariest thing I ever had to go through. And I've only known since the end of February that I needed this soon.
Now you can relax and heal and enjoy your family. I'm sure your boys were thrilled to have you home!
Take care and continue healing everyday!

Ashley Molyneaux I wonder if your BP dipped as a result of blood loss from surgery? And now that all the fluids are slowly working their way out of your system, maybe it's increased? I know when I had my C-section, my blood pressure was super low the following couple of days. Then all that extra fluid they pumped in me started taking it's toll. My BP was in the same range as yours for about 6 weeks after my C-section. I know it's different, but I think maybe our body takes some adjusting after losing and gaining so much blood in such a short time frame.

Finally got home about 7:30 yesterday evening!!! Yay...it was nice to be home, but very emotional and I'm not sure why. I just felt like I could cry at the drop of a hat.
The 2 hour car ride home really did me in I think! I also did too much yesterday for rehab and I was beyond exhausted and tired.
Trying to get comfortable wasn't an easy task and quite frustrating for me, but was finally able to get comfortable and get some sleep.
Did anyone else seem to be emotional? It's not a sad type of emotion but hard to explain. It's as if I've reverted back to a toddler who can't communicate their feelings...lol
My family especially my parents have been amazing through my recovery! I'm sure they are beyond exhausted but they have been there every minute!
Trying to make myself take it easy is a hard task for a young mom who normally goes 1,000 miles a minute...that in itself is a big adjustment for me too.
But I really can't complain about my recovery! It has been great so far compared to other stories and I am truly greatful for this.
I hope that everyone could have the experience that I've had.
Thinking of those having surgery soon, recovering at home and in the hospital! My thoughts are with you!

Amy Dorsey Tonia, i'm glad you touched on that emotional thing. I think we all deal with things differently but I can say I am just at the start of my journey through this process and I have been full of emotions. From being completely scared and shocked to full of anxiety about the financial aspect, to kind of shutting down in social situations and keeping a distance from people, feeling completely alone like no one I know can understand what I'm going through, to thinking about the long road head and being terrified of all of it. I can easily see how one would have an emotional breakdown after the process is finally complete! And then the emotions of getting over the hump of recovery! I think with your experience it is completely normal! Thank you for sharing your journey. Hearing all of these stories helps me face it all and not feel so alone.

Kate Watson Wow they started you into rehab already? Glad you are home, where I think true recovery can begin. I totally relate to the emotional issues. I cried my whole way home from the hospital. I still cry at the drop of a hat a few weeks after surgery. I agree with Amy, there's kind of an emotional release. And for me, there has been this deep gratitude for my family and others who supported me through this experience which chokes me up. The tears also come from frustration sometimes because I can't do a lot of things yet and my temporary loss of independence is hard. I couldn't open the Tylenol yesterday and I about had a meltdown. Haha. Well, really glad to hear of your success and hope you'll keep us posted on your progress!

I'm feel I'm getting stronger and things get easier everyday. It's the little things I know and I have been so thankful from all the different stories and experiences. This along with my great supporters have really made a great impact to my recovery.
BP is fantastic and I am so glad about that!! Before surgery I was taking 3 different BP meds and sounds like I will be taking a small dose of Lopressor which they are using for heart medicine to help control the heart rate and not even for blood pressure. I am so thankful that I won't have to take all that medicine.
Blood sugar levels are still fluctuating...sometimes it's good sometimes it's too low and sometimes it's too high. All is still normal from what they tell me.
I sat in my chair for a couple hours today and got a good sponge bath and hair combed which felt so so good.
I also walked about 1/4 of the way down the hall and back and felt great.
I am only taking Tylenol to control the pain which has been great so far...hardly any pain...just soreness from the incision area...other than that no pain.
Hope others are recovering well and continuing to be positive to get better...not everyone's story is the same or the outcome is the same, but hoping my positive experience will make a difference for someone else.
Sounds like you have started the recovery process nicely! Best wishes to you!

Today I was able to meet the team that will be with me during surgery.
I was caught off guard a little bit because I had to check in with the surgical nurse on the pediatric floor. I also found out that this is where I would have my surgery and also be in the pediatric ICU. My parents got a kick out of it...we sat in the kiddie waiting room and watched cartoons before our appointment....lol
My family was relieved because they will be able to be with me the entire time in the ICU all day and night😊
Talked to the surgeon and he said that he is going to try to repair the valve but if not then he will replace it.
We went over options, he provides pros and cons of different procedures. I chose to have the pig valve put in if he needs to replace it. He won't know if he can repair it until he sees exactly what's going on.
It was a long day, but well worth it!

Shannon Gray Thinking of you! I have 2 children...9 and 2... And I can honestly say it was the most difficult aspect, emotionally, to get through. Still getting through:) I live in NC, but decided to have surgery at Cleveland Clinic. Along with post surgical complications, we were away from my girls almost a month. Truly broke my heart. It was also during the time my oldest turned 9. You can do this, and this will become a. Lip on your radar screen, very soon. Your boys will do beautifully! Although difficult, your family will truly understand their strength, as well. Lots of prayers!

Catrina Glover Praying for you and your family. It sounds like you are in great hands. I know your surgery will be SUCCESSFUL.
I have a 9 year old daughter. She was 4 during my 1st surgery so not as aware of what was happening as this 2nd time around. She seemed to handle it better than I thought. I talked to her about it and she would hear conversations and see/hear me crying. I told her teacher in advance what was going on. I tried to keep her schedule as routine as I could.
I think the after I came home was harder on her because she saw everything I had to deal with as far as recovery. She said at one point "i just want my normal mom back" I told her "I know baby and mom is trying really hard".

Got all my testing done today and was doing so good until the last CT scan with contrast.
My BP went the wrong direction when they gave me Lopressor...it went up instead of down...3 extra hours at the hospital just to get it down.
If that doesn't rack your nerves I don't know what does...lol
All seemed to go well and I'm on my way home.
Tracy Simmons Sounds like you were in good hands that and your BP finally returned to normal.

I am thankful that my surgeon decided I did not need to do a heart cath!! I'm not sure I could handle that very well!
Hope everyone is doing well today and thinking of those having surgery and also recovering.

I experienced some complications, but it's something that no one could do anything about... Just my body's reaction to the surgery. You are in great hands! I had a picture of my two young daughters by me at all times while away... They kept me going:) It was something I was so thankful to have with me in the hospital. Wishing all the best for you.

This week may be different...it's my last week of work, I have all my pre-surgery testing and getting all the final tasks buttoned up. It will be a busy one, but also full of emotional ups and downs.
Wishing everyone having surgery soon and those recovering thoughts and prayers!

I have to admit...I have 2 pretty amazing little guys in my life (6&9). We have been talking about mom's upcoming surgery. I try to explain the best way I can without loosing their attention span...normally that's about a minute...lol.
My oldest is so smart and absorbs everything..he doesn't seem to interested in a lot of the details, but he understands what surgery is about.
My youngest is much more intrigued by it all. He told me the other day that he hoped it was ok because he told his teacher that I was getting a new heart....poor teacher she probably had no idea how to respond....and with a kindergartener in your house, everything that happens is open for discussion with EVERYONE😂
I explained to him that I wasn't getting a new heart, just a new piece...next he wants to know what it looks like. I told him I would show him a picture, but he quickly spoke up and said...nah I think that would be "gross".
They are both so sweet and caring and my emotions are starting to ramp up this week! 2 weeks today I will be having my surgery.
My boys are what helps keep me busy and strong and not having much downtime to think too much about things.
Wishing all the best to my fellow heart friends who are having surgery soon and those that are recovering from surgery.

Kelly Weisgarber Hi again Tonia. Your boys sound adorable. Even though mine were 18,20 and 22 at the time of my surgery I hated to have them worry. To answer some of your questions, I am feeling pretty well. I still have some pvc's and I'm sometimes lightheaded- I guess I thought that would all be gone after surgery. I had my surgery on a Monday morning and was in icu one day, moved to a regular room, then I was released Friday. First couple days were rough... But it all was not as bad as I had thought it would be.
Can I ask who is your cardiologist? I saw Dr. Stephens, really like him but as of last week he left the clinic and I need to chose another. You can email me directly if you'd like. Kel05@roadrunner.com. Thanks and take care.

Shannon Sullivan Awesome. My boys are 9 and 10. They both seem uninterested as well. But I did tell them people they can talk to if they need to. I also am making mine heart pillows just like mine, and we also started a clip board of questions. We posted a clipboard in our kitchen and they can write down any question(s) to ask the cardiologist on my next visit. No question is too small.
Its natural to have all those emotions....just let them flow.

Clare Auten My kids were 4,7 and 13 at time of surgery. Even though they seemed uninterested, they were. They also worried in their own way. We found keeping the schedule consistent helped (had grandma stay here while I was in hospital). I do have to say that my 7 year old only gave her "90%" on lunch fixing, no one is as mom. ;)
Tonia Earley Thanks everyone! Love the ideas Shannon! Someone else did that as well on here.

Clare, I agree they will probably worry in their own way, but I have to give them credit...kids are so brave and strong and I think we always often underestimate them. Their routine won't change much which is great! My inlaws will be keeping them most of the time while I am in the hospital. They spend a lot of time with them now while we work, so that won't be much different, which I am thankful for. My parents are coming in from Texas and my mom will be here for a month to help take care of me while I am in the hospital and at home recovering. I have a great support system for sure.

I know that it is normal to have anxiety about surgery and recovery and all the "what ifs"...looking for some helpful hints or things that others have done to help with anxiety...I've been trying meditation, but have a really hard time getting my brain to relax...I've been doing some reading, read Adam's book in about 4 hours and it was helpful.
I've come to terms that I have to have surgery...I guess at this point I don't have a choice it's schedules and things are set in place...but having anxiety about the whole waking up from surgery with breathing tube, wires, drainage tubes and all other kinds of things sticking out of my body😬...and the feeling of freaking out about it.
Thanks for all the positive vibes!

Kelly Weisgarber Hi Tonia. I just saw that you're from Minerva- we are practically neighbors. I live in Bolivar. I had aortic valve repair and annuerism repair at the Cleveland clinic in November. Dr. Svensson did the surgery. Very happy with the care I received. Let me know if I can answer any questions. I had anxiety too. It's good you don't have much longer to wait. Waiting is hard. I'm 48. Only knew of my faulty valve for 8 months when surgery was scheduled. Take care.

I have heard all of the surgeons at the Clevelans Clikic are top notch. I am very comfortable with Dr. Pettersson. I ended up going there for a second opinion and felt very comfortable with him and my cardiologist there. I know I am in good hands, but it's the experience of having a major surgery like this that freaks me out. I've never had any type of surgery before.
I look forward to hearing back from you and I hope you are doing great and recovering well!

Hi Tonia, completely normal. I was so scared before surgery. This site decreased my anxiety significantly and has helped me normalize this crazy experience. Just remember that the statistics are in your favor. This is a well perfected surgery for basic cases of valve replacement. I have two boys (6 & 9) and a husband that need me. Before surgery, I made heart pillows with my kids so we could "hug" each other before surgery. They kept asking me when I got home if I felt their hugs and I asked if they felt my hugs back. :) I wrote letters to my boys to read while I was in surgery. My oldest used it as a bookmark and said he read it multiple times during the day and it made him feel better. If it is of comfort, I do not remember having the breathing tube in; I do remember them telling me to cough which I guess was when they pulled it out. I had the hardest time opening my eyes after surgery. I could hear my husband talking to me and could barely shake my head. I also remember the surgeon talking to me and was able to squint at him for a minute and say, "thank you" before I closed my eyes again. Best wishes to you. You will do great!

Wanda Mroz Tonia, I was absolutely terrified... But now on the other side I'm pretty damn proud of myself for getting through it. I worried about the breathing tube, wires, tubes too... A lot. Breathing tube... I woke up with it yes... I wanted it out but it stayed in a little longer.. About an hour. Was it awful? No. Is it awful coming out? Yes... BUT... It's only a few seconds and in the big picture, totally doable... U will get through it. You may be .like others who don't remember it at all! You're on drugs and you'll handle it. Drainage tubes are easier... I just did nt look at them at all... They came out the 2nd day before I was moved from ICUthey gave me a shot of fentinol just before ... It was uncomfortable but it feels so much better when they are out. Pacing wires came out around day 4... They feel like a sweater unraveling in your chest but did not hurt at all. All of this you will survive. Honest. Hang in there... Try to put your mind at ease... We are all much stronger than we think we are. Hugs and prayers... 💞
